Bear Down Gymnasium is a historic landmark on the University of Arizona campus. Located near the center of campus on the U of A Mall, this Campus Recreation facility continues to serve several important roles for the University community. A valid University of Arizona ID is required upon entry of the facility.

Bear Down Field is located north of Arizona Stadium. It is utilized by Arizona Intramurals
and Sport Clubs and is lighted for night play.

Historic Timeline
November 1925 -
$130,000 contract led to construction beginning.
July 1926 -
Construction completed.
January 7, 1927 -
First basketball game. Arizona Varsity defeats Frosh, 33-20.
January 21, 1927 -
Dedication game. Crowd estimated at 3,000 sees Arizona defeat Tempe State Teachers College, 29-18.
January 1928 -
"Bear Down" motto painted on roof in honor of "Button" Salmon's last words to J.F. "Pop" McKale. Facility unofficially becomes known as "Bear Down Gym."

1942-44 -
Gym used as dormitory for Navy Training School.
January 19, 1973 -
Last varsity basketball game played in Bear Down Gym. Arizona defeats UC-Santa Barbara, 79-77.
March 24, 1982 -
Fire in the gymnasium caused major damage to the basketball court floor and spaces below.
March 1983 -
Title "Bear Down Gym" finally made official by Board of Regents.
Today -
While its context has changed with the growth of the campus, Bear Down Gymnasium maintains full integrity of design and location. It is used primarily for
Arizona Intramurals and open recreation.
